In his book, Instant Healing, author and Hawaiian
shaman Serge Kahili King makes the extraordinary claim that we are capable of healing cuts,
headaches, colds, depression, bruises, and even
broken bones in less than an hour with no medical
treatment. King reminds us that mental thoughts
and images create immediate physical responses.
For example, if you visualize someone you detest, your body will become tense--even though
the person really isn\'t there. King goes so far as
to claim that the body responds exclusively to the
mind. If your mind decides your body should get
sick--for example, to avoid an unpleasant meeting or to gain more attention from loved ones-
then, your body will begin to manifest the symptoms of, say, a cold. Our body reacts according
to our mental beliefs and expectations and this
is why, according to King, we catch colds from
standing in the rain, but not when we shower,
why we feel weaker and sicker when the doctor
tells us we\'re ill, and why people in certain cultures are suddenly cured of serious ailments from
drinking“holy water.”If our minds dictate our
physical responses, then it stands to reason that
we can use positive mental thoughts and imagery
to enhance physical healing. King radically claims
that the body is capable of“instant healing”(less
than one hour),“rapid healing”(less than one

day), and “fast healing”(less than one week), and
he proposes a variety of healing methods, based
on Hawaiian shamanism.
The first method King describes is using the power of words. With great authority, commitment,
and sincerity, you verbally instruct your body how
to respond. This can be done in a number of ways.
One is by repeating a detailed affirmation such
as“I am as healthy as when I practiced ballet in
high school.”The idea is to repeat a key phrase
until you can feel an effect. More difficult than
this is the radical affirmation where you might
affirm, for example,“I don\'t have asthma! I don\'t
have asthma!”This method is difficult because
you must affirm something that is not yet true.
Another simpler method is to repeat a health-
enhancing metaphor such as“I am a tree, full
of life and strength.”Anything that has qualities you admire can be used in metaphorical healing. A fourth method is to give directions to your
body such as“Okay, body, I want you to enhance
your immune system and clean out all toxins, improve blood circulation and digestion.”Finally,
you can try giving yourself blessings. Blessings basically involve praise. You may express
gratitude,“Thank you, body, for being strong
and beautiful and healthy today!”Or you may
provide validation,“Great job, body, on getting
rid of that headache!”Use praise lavishly. Bodies, like children, are said to love praise.
Another healing method King describes is using the power of imagination. One way to do this

time when you were healthy. Be sure to include all
your senses in your recall (how things sounded,
smelled, felt, tasted, etc.) as well as the emotions
associated with times of health. The more detailed
the memory, the faster your body will readjust to
match it. Another use of imagination is to create a
healthy fantasy. For example, if your muscles are
sore, imagine yourself getting the greatest massage in the world. If you have the flu, you can
imagine that doctors from the future have arrived in a time machine to give you a perfect cure.
Let your imagination run wild. Or you can simply
imagine yourself bathed in healing light.
By far the most radical use of imagination is found

in Kings“mind-blower technique.”As soon as
you receive an injury, you repeat the actions that
led to the injury, but change the ending so that
you avoid the fateful blow or cut. For example,
if you caught your finger in a door, you repeat
the swinging of the door against your finger, but
pull your finger away at the last instant. At the
same time, you forcefully repeat out loud, over
and over,“My finger was not hit! My finger was
not hit!”The intent here is for your mind to convince your body through speech and action that
the injury never occurred. King himself claims
to have healed badly broken fingers by crying
out,“Nothing happened!”for 20 minutes while
reenacting his physical movements minus the
stumble that injured him. This method requires
extraordinary commitment because most people,
when injured, immediately obsess over the damage, replaying in their minds the events that led

So does this really work? Ive tried out most of the

Ive experienced both success and failure. Most
memorably, while riding the subway last year, I
got smacked in the eye by a hard plastic handle.
I was certain I would get a black eye. I immediately grabbed the handle again and repeated its
swing, but had it miss my eye, and at the same
time, I quietly repeated,“My eye is fine! My eye
is fine!”To my astonishment, my eye, which was
already feeling hot, suddenly cooled and the sharp
pain quickly reduced. In a few minutes, the pain
was gone and my eye was fine. However, right
now, as I write this, I have a cold that refuses to
drop. I have asked my body nicely to get rid of it,
