Recently, I had a chance to visit Haeinsa, the Zen Buddhist temple in South Korea\'s South Kyongsan province, in the district of Hapchon, after an impromptu invitation from some Korean friends in Daegu. I took part in the temple stay program, which is about a 24 hour program to learn about what life is like at a temple.

It was a very good in experience in that in a very short amount of time, I felt like I got a good view into the life of a buddhist monk. The temple stay offers some instructions on the proper etiquette, such as how to bow and do prostrations. There were several opportunities to have conversations with the monks, both in Korean and in English. I also got to see what a Buddhist service is like, in addition to getting a full tour of the temple and learning about its history.

As a foreigner who comes from a place where my family has a very short history, it is striking to be in a place which has a much longer history. There are buildings and even trees that are hundreds of years old. The thought that this space has protected, guided, and created the environment for deep thought, meditation, and spiritual growth for such a long time was with me for my entire visit and I felt like I became a small and humble part of it.

I also appreciated the tranquility. After 9 o\'clock in the evening, the temple goes to sleep in order to rise very early. I woke up at about 2:45 am in order to get to the early service, become a part of the drums, and do the one hundred eight prostrations. I felt like I experienced many things in a short amount of time.

Visiting the Haeinsa was certainly a worthwhile experience and I felt like I got to know Korea a lot better.

최근 나는 대구에 사는 한국 친구의 즉흥적인 초청으로 경남 합천에 위치한 Zen Buddhist temple 해인사를 방문하였다. 나는 템플스테이 프로그램에 참가하였다. 그것은 절에서는 무슨 생활을 하는지 24시간의 체험이었다. 그것은 매우 짧은 시간이었지만 사찰의 스님 생활을 배우는 유익한 매우 좋은 경험이었다.
템플스테이는 일반적인 절과 완전히 엎드려 (오체투지) 절하는 방법 등 품위 있는 예절법을 가르쳐주었다. 스님과 영어와 한국어로 대화할 수 있는 여러 번의 기회도 있었다. 이것은 불교의 봉사가 무엇인가를 알게 해주었다.
또한 나는 전반적인 해인사 안내를 통하여 이곳의 역사를 알게 되었다.
매우 짧은 역사를 가진 자신의 나라와 같은 곳에서 온 외국인들에게는 이곳이 유서 깊은 긴 역사를 가진 곳이기에 인상적이었다. 몇 백년이 넘는 절(집)과 나무들이 있었다. 이러한 공간과 환경은 오랜 세월 동안 사람들에게 깊은 사색과 명상을 할 수 있는 환경을 주었다고 생각한다. 그리고 오랫동안 영적인 성장은 내가 해인사에 있는 하루 동안 미천하게나마 짧은 경험을 하게 되었다.
나는 또한 가라앉는 마음에 감사했다. 절에서는 다음날 일찍 일어나기 위하여 오후 9시에 취침한다. 나는 새벽예불과, 범종의식, 108배를 하기 위하여 오전 2시 45분에 일어났다. 짧은 시간 동안 많은 것을 경험하였다. 해인사 방문은 확실히 가치 있는 경험이었고, 한국에 대하여 좀 더 잘 알게 된 것 같았다.
